Hello. Does anyone know if the WD My Book Live works well for streaming videos to the Oculus Go using the SKYBOX app?
All I know is that the SKYBOX app is compatible with DLNA but I'm worried about the transfer among other things.
Thanks in advance.

The transfer rate of that HDD should be sufficient. If you want to stream videos from that HDD to the Oculus Go you should use a 5 GHz wifi connection, because the bitrate of some VR videos is too high for 2.4 GHz wifi and the playback could stutter. But with 5 GHz it should be fine.

Thomas Hi, Thomas. I should have thanked you 3 weeks ago for your comment. I’m sorry but I forgot to do that. Anyway, today -after a long wait- I got my 2TB WD My Book Live. Do you have any idea (or a link) about configuring the WD so it can appear on my Oculus Go using the Skybox app? Some tutorial? I don’t have a clue. Thanks in advance.

First you would have to connect the WD harddrive to your computer. Then you would have to setup either an SMB share on that harddrive or set up an DLNA server (like for example Plex) on Windows. This way the data from the harddrive will be available for other devices on the network. Your computer also needs to be connected to the same network as your Oculus Go, so that Skybox can find and access the SMB share or DLNA server you setup on the computer.

Thanks for your reply. I did that. It was kinda successful the first time but then a some network errors appeared and, after a re-scan- the DLNA folder didn't show up again. I connected the WD with the wireless modem downstairs and connected the Oculus Go with the router (repeater/wisp mode) upstairs. I configured my internet connection this way a year ago so the router can't extend the 5G signal upstairs and use it with device-demanding speed like PS4 Pro and 4K Netflix. I merged both signals (2.4G and 5G) under the same name and password and configured the PS4 Pro to connect only to the 5G. But this does not seem to work well with the Oculus Go and WD My Book Live. It's unstable. Then, I placed the WD next to the router upstairs and it worked better.
Do you have an Oculus too? Could you succesfully expand wirelessly its limited storage for watching 2D/3D/4K/VR movies? How did you achieve that?

Does anyone know how usb might effect DLNA? I have usb 3.0 drives but I believe my old seedbox only has usb 2.0 bus ports. Would this effect DLNA streaming? I can't say I noticed a difference from my DLNA streaming on this setup and a file I loaded on my headset but I wanted some confirmation from community/experts. Thanks!

Yes I have an Oculus Go and expanded its storage by accessing a DLNA share on my home network. For videos with lower resolution and bitrate my 2.4GHz wireless network was sufficient at first, but for higher resolution content I had to upgrade the wireless network to 5GHz.
If placing the WD next to the router solves the issue, the signal is probably not strong enough over the longer distance. 5GHz wifi usually has less coverage/reach compared to 2.4GHz.

USB 2.0 should be fast enough for video streaming, the bottleneck is usually the wifi speed.

Thomas Thanks for your comment, Thomas. You know, every house has a different structure and home network configuration. Some people use just the modem, others need repeaters. The best thing that worked form me was placing a powerful router upstairs and using it as a repeater or wisp mode or something (I don't know much about the difference between AP and other modes but the actual configuration sends powerful 5GHz signal to the upstairs rooms. I experimented issues placing the WD My Book Live 2TB when it was connected to the modem but it worked better together with the router. But the whole didn't convince me (for some other reasons) and I got a WD My Passport Wireless Pro 2TB. It was way better than the other. I loaded it with several movies (the Skybox cinema experience is awesome: realistic and sharp). I activated the 5GHz signal 'cause it's close to the Oculus Go. And I deactivated the Twonky/DLNA mode because I didn't want the app to show two folder containing the same thing (you know , the SMB folder and the DLNA folder). Also, the DLNA mode creates a dozen of subfolders by category which I don't like at all. As for know, I like my current setup. It's now called: SKYBOX + WD MY PASSPORT WIRELESS PRO + OCULUS GO. Should I change this subject name? Should I close this topic? (I have no idea how to do that, BTW). Thanks for every comment and suggestions I received. Greetings from Argentina.
