Future request: Support for MVC 3D file format

we need proper 3D. There is no other feature equally important. it's more important than 5k video playback or daydream support. there is no 5k video medium out there, but TONS of 3D blurays waiting to be seen in the best quality possible. MVC is the holy grail, the one and only thing that will set skybox miles ahead of the competition. don't fuck it up, know your priorities!

ps: maybe you could ask the bigscreen devs for a hint. they show paramount movies in 3D and they could have found a way to decode mvc.

To support MVC 3D format takes
1. Lots of working hours compared to other features
2. Potentially an expensive licensing fee

As a small studio with limited resources, we prioritize on features that are more cost-effective and bring users with better immersive experiences. And I would say to act on features like MVC 3D support, we need a bigger team and at least a sufficient cash flow.

I second this request very much.
The main problem is that TV-Sets which support 3D are no longer available.
So in order to keep the 3D experience we enjoyed as long as they were available (and mine fortunately is still in good health and working) VR-Headsets are the only means to have it in the near future.
Of course there is a long and winding road (and quite time and resource demanding) to convert what ever we have (Bluray Disks) first to mkv and then by another pass to SBS or OU formats, continuously testing by trial and error which quality setting might be appropriate and settle for a compromise.
Therefore supporting MVC Video in any container capable of it (MKV or M2TS) would be like Christmas and Easter on one day :-)))

Please note the circumstances have now changed with the late 2020 release of high resolution & screendoor free (and highly popular) headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 and HP Reverb G2. These now make high quality VR Cinema viewing a reality.

SkyBox has the potential to become the Premier recommended choice for 3D Virtual Cinema, if SkyBox were to now support the Blu-ray native MVC format to allow delivering optimum image quality (so no lossy SBS re-encoding is needed). As well as the advantage of users not needing twice the storage space, for storing duplicate copies of their 3D Blu-ray rips (ie. the original MVC quality rip, plus the lossy SBS re-encode for VR use).

understood ...... AND found a workaround :-)
It is not as elegant as Skybox but it spares hundreds of hours of converting 3D-BDs to HSBS
It converts those Discs or their .ISO Backups on the fly (= when playing) to HSBS or HOU.
What you need is the k-lite Codec Pack (Standard) with MPC-HC on your PC and Virtual Desktop on the Quest/PC and it works like a charm :-)

To convert stereoscopic videos from MVC encoding to Full SBS/OU, I use MKVToolnix + FRIM MVC Decoder + FFmpeg, a semi-automatization workflow. Even though taking advantage of premium GPU and SSD, it takes at least 1x time to process before I can watch.

Yes, please add MVC support. Is this possible now that you are charging $14.99 for the App?
I would also be happy if MVC support was introduced as a paid Add-on feature, if required for any licensing costs?

Having MVC support available in SkyBox would cement SkyBox as the premium movie viewing experience, and make you the go to App for a large number of 3D home theatre enthusiasts.

Furthermore, MVC support is now even more significant with the advent of the latest higher resolution headsets (Quest 2 and Reverb G2). Now, even more than before, quality VR based cinema is truely becoming a reality!
With higher resolution headsets, retaining the full original MVC video stream quality has even more significance, rather than needing to use lossy re-encoding to a SBS format.

ps. For the many who are forced to work around this by using Virtual Desktop and the MadVR / MPC-HD solution for direct 3D MVC playback, make sure you are setting MadVR to switch your PC desktop refresh to 23.976fps (ie. 1080p24 mode), to ensure smooth motion rendering of your Movies. :)

Hopefully we can all move to an optimised all-in-one SkyBox VR solution, once MVC support is eventually implemented. :)

I would like to add my vote for you to please add support for the full 3D MVC format, as created by MakeMKV or DVDFab 3D Passthrough rips. I own100+ 3D Blu Ray (1080p) movies that I would like to rip to watch in my Oculus Quest 2, and I'm quite disappointed at the half resolution quality of the 3D SBS rips I have tried so far. For me, this would be the single most important feature to add, and I would be much more eager to recommend Skybox to my friends & family, as several of them are also 3D Blu Ray enthusiasts. Your product is currently good, but would be exceptional if you could add this. Thanks for your consideration!

MVC support (for example, with MKV files) might be more priority than Blu-ray support (which is stated as existing in the SkyBox Oculus Store promo video but actually neither ISO container for Blu-ray images nor BDMV Blu-ray structure parsing is supported)

So fingers crossed. Hopefully the influx of new Quest users means some funds/time can be put towards implementing this feature, and we can finally watch proper 3D-Bluray files without resorting to subpar SBS encodes.

Please consider Multiview Video Coding!
The 2D plus Delta encoding is the only way to watch 3D Blu-ray movies as intended, without resorting to re-encoding and subsequent quality alteration (plus additional time, power, and space to produce and store those SBS "by-products").
With VR replacing the dying 3D TVs for good, it would be a must for proper 3D media preservation. ٩(｡•́‿•̀｡)۶

Hello Skybox Team, is there any update or ETA on full 3D MKV support? As I mentioned earlier, I will be happy to update my review to 5 stars if you add this. Fellow Consumers, if you will also agree to update your reviews to 5 stars for this feature, then please like or comment on this post. This will help the developers to understand just how important of a feature this would be, and to hopefully encourage them to add it soon. Developers, here is an opportunity to increase your overall rating for Skybox, which I predict will help your sales. I did find a clunky workaround which allows you to convert the full 3D MKV rips to full resolution SBS videos, but it requires multiple steps & configuration setting changes during the conversion. Developers, this video may also help you to understand what's involved with implementing this feature.

As far as I know there is NO Software in the market which supports MKV-3D

But there are Hardware Players like HiMedia Q5-Pro and Q10 Pro which are Android based and do playback BD-ISOs as well as BD-Backups in BD-File Structure (BDMV Folders) no matter if 2D or 3D.

Preferred approach of course would be the support of ISO material or BD-File Structure because this would require only one backup run of the BluRay physical disc without further conversion - either create an ISO or run MakeMKV's Backup feature.
And only if this is not possible MKV-3D comes into play because it requires not only a backup but a conversion as well.

Since the mentioned HiMedia Players (and certainly other brands too) are all Android based it should be not too difficult to provide their functionality to an Oculus Quest which is Android as well.

Razorback I was suprised by your comment of there being NO Software which supports MKV-3D.
Firstly, I think we need to clarify that you are talking about MVC 3D format MKV files.

I see your follow-up noting MPC (Media Player Classic) as one MVC software solution.

Also, I just did a quick google for "MVC MKV playback" and discovered a link indicating that the Kodi open source project also now supports MVC 3D playback. This link may assist the developers: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=221407

Also, you say the preferred approach would be support for ISO / BD file structure.
I would like to disagree with this as being the preferred approach, for the following reasons:

The most pressing requirement is the ability to decode and display a MVC encoded video file. Currently the most straightforward, clearly understood, and popular "open" container for MVC 3D video is MKV.
By requesting support for BD file structure / ISO files (effectively full Blu-ray content decoding), this adds significantly more complex development effort, which will likely only delay delivery of the core MVC video decoding need.
Many of us (most?) prefer to rip all desired ISO content to individual MKV files (eg. main feature only, and perhaps any special features of interest), for both simplicity of playback, and also for optomising storage space.
nb. Plex does a great job of indexing / cataloging these MKV files and also provides the DLNA server functionality for SkyBoxVR playing back MKV container videos from from your centralised network media library.
