Is the delay indefinite? Thats unfortunate. I have been looking forward to this for a long time now.
Oculus Quest highest video resolution??
Delay does NOT seem indefinite :) It is going to be worth the wait I'm sure.
I got this reply from Yum the other day via email:
Regarding the high-resolution video playback solution, our engineers are trying to make SKYBOX more stable with the solution ON.
So far we have successfully using Quest to display the high-res video and decode the video without distortion.
I would say we are on the final step before releasing the feature.
But still I am not able to give a exact ETA at the moment.
Stay safe, team Skybox. Looking forward to the Quest update whenever it happens, but there are more important things in life.
Any information about time to release this function to beta app? We wait it a long time ago. Maybe beta testers can see it and help you to improve?
wait one more year and we will see it!
A month ago it sounded like it was close to release, any updates?
I don't mind paying for the app if it supports higher resolution formats, I also need to find if it is cross buy (buy once for quest, use it on Rift?), but that is a different question.
HIYA any news on this? I would definitely pay if skybox could deliver 5k video playback on the quest
SkyBox team request high resolution videos at reddit for testing this solution. I think, it is on finish stage.
SkyBox team, when you planned to release this feature?
any update on when quest will receive 5k+ support?

vrtraveller - Its been next month for over a year now I think. Personally I assume the project is dead, you cant keep pushing timelines like that and not have someone high up breathing down your neck. So unless these guys are garage developers (which could be the case) then assume that they have no one working on it and its waaaay at the end of the backlog.
Edit: To clarify, I still use Skybox for everything and its definitely the best player out there for everyday use, I am absolutely not bagging the product at all, I am just saying that I dont believe that the 5/8K is a priority item for them. Also, in saying that, its the most requested feature on the forum, so I really dont understand why its depriotised.
So am I right in thinking that as of this moment, with no sign of this project materialising, there is no advantage in upgrading to a Quest from a Go in terms of video playback? Sorry for such a noob question, but I am one.
the problem is not so much the resolution but the framerate of the source.
I have tested with a 5700x2700 clip which is originally 60 fps and this gives you more or less a dia-show on Quest.
Recoded this clip at the same resolution and bitrate to 30 fps (with XMediaRecode) and bingo - works as it should :-)
Addendum:
The Quest uses a Snapdragon 835 (at least this is the information from Oculus)
According to the Specs this Hardware maxes out in decoding at 4K @ 60fps
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Qualcomm_Snapdragon_systems-on-chip
So - in order to smoothly play resolutions above 4K you only can lower the fps.
Bitrate is NO issue !
And of course 8K will not work at all, no matter what fps you might want to choose :-)
due to the upcoming release of the Oculus Quest 2,
we decided to take another road and support 8K+ on the Quest 2 instead.
Stay tuned

Just give us a beta, doesn't matter if it's unstable or if there are still bugs,
it's a beta! Give the monkeys sugar!
Yum any update on the beta release or why not now?
