You may wanna try h264 with lower frame rate (30 fps should be alright) and bit rate (below 40mb/s) on 5400x2700 videos. It looks pretty smoothy for us.

Hi. Sorry for the dumb question ... but is there any advantage in playing 5K videos on Oculus Quest in comparison to 4K videos or 3K?

Because the resolution of the Oculus Quest is 1600x1440 which means 3200x1440 for both eyes. And in my opinion I don't see a difference between 3200x1440 and 3840x1920 videos. I really don't. Maybe its my eyes ;-)
Where You see a difference ist when the video has a bad compression and You see artefacts. But a good video with 3200x1440 seems to be sufficient for me - because the Hardware cannot show more pixels and 5K only needs more CPU/GPU power for playing&rescaling.

Or is it just so You don't need to convert 5K/6K/8K videos for playing native on an Oculus Quest or whatelse?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas

      It's your eyes.

The total video resolution is wrapped around your head either in 180 or 360 degrees. What you view in your line-of-sight is essentially only a part of the whole video (cropped or zoomed in if you will), which effectively has a lower visible resolution than the total resolution of the video.

If you had a 4k or 5k video source, that visible portion can then reach closer to the full resolution of the display. As for 4k vs. 5k, I wouldn't know, but there is a clear difference between 3.2k and 4k.

Are you guys still working on optimizing the quest for 5k and up videos? anything higher than 4k and i am getting very bad stuttering, and this is with all quest video players. would be great if was fixed in skybox
        thanks

this is sad, and doesnt make sense. dont understand how come my gear vr with s7, which is older tech than the quest, is able to properly decode 5k video and give smooth playback and the quest cant.

We are settling on a planning release date of March 1st on Quest and Gear.
This is a hard project and our engineers are working hard on it for about a year now.
Just need to finish it up and polish the audio output now.
Thank you all being very patience with us.

i think that's because your s7 is probably a non-US S7 which uses exynos chips instead of snapdragon chips. theexyones chips have been much better at decoding 5k, the quest uses a snapdragon.

Not sure Go could handle the solution without overheating too soon.

Hello. Sorry for my english. Are you really want to release this feature for Quest on 1st March?

                        Sorry for the late reply.
No we're not going to release it today.
For the past two months SKYBOX STUDIO was closed due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
We just got back to work and the release might be delayed to Mid-April.
                        Thanks for your support :)

Maybe, you can release this feature for quest version in beta mode? I think very many people waiting this fature a long time.
