  • Void Theatre Environment is not truly black

Hello,

I've recently started using my PSVR 2 with my PC running SteamVR and Skybox to watch DLNA files and so far its been pretty great. However because the PSVR 2 uses OLED displays I've noticed that the Void environment is not truly a pure black colour even with the ambient lighting set to 0.

Example

The image I've attached has had its brightness and shadow levels adjusted so that you can see that it is not a pure black on a non-OLED display.

It may be hard to see but it is much more noticeable in VR especially when your eyes have adapted to the lower light levels while watching. For me I find it hard to ignore which kinda ruins the overall experience.

    Hi, thanks for your feedback.

We will take a further look into this issue. But to be honest, we do not have a PSVR 2 on hand right now so I'm afraid this issue can't be solved in a short time. Sorry for the inconvenience caused!

Hi Lucy, because Skybox is running through SteamVR, I imagine this issue is not specific to the PSVR 2. It can probably be reproduced on any compatible SteamVR headset with OLED displays.

I believe it is just the filter of the ambient light setting not making the void skybox texture dark enough. I've actually noticed that the Moon environment when its ambient light is set to 0 is actually a pure black! With this discovery I am able to enjoy what I am watching in VR.

If you or one of the other devs on the Skybox team took an eye dropper tool to the void environment texture with the ambient light set to 0, I'd be curious to see what colour you get. From an unedited screenshot I get a colour hex of #020202 just past the edges of the screen and a colour hex of #010101 just above the screen. This tracks because when the ambient light is not set to 0 you can see the void texture looking down is a light gray and gradually turns into space as you look up in VR.

Hi, thanks for your reply! We reproduced the issue in the Void environment and we will try to fix it in the future updates.
