  • Quest 3 Lag when playing videos via SMB

Hi there,

Same video played on Quest 2 smoothly, but on Quest 3 super laggy and unwatchable. Not sure if there is any compatibility issue on Quest 3?

Both Quest 2 and 3 connected to the same 5G Wifi6.
Same way to access the same video on SMB (Synology cloud storage).
No background download on device.
All Skybox settings are the same.
Copied the video to the Quest 3 local storage and played smoothly.
Skybox version is 1.1.4 on both Quest 2 and 3.

Any helps is very much appreciated.

    Hi Allen,

    Thank you for your feedback!

    Could you please share with us your INFO level logs? Logs will contain some information that helps us know what went wrong.

    Just go to SKYBOX's Global Settings, change the Logging Levels to "INFO", reproduce the laggy issue, then click the BUG icon in the upper-right corner of Global Settings, and send us a bug report attached with logs(tick the "upload logs" box).

    When we find the causes of the issue, we'll help you fix it as soon as possible.

      Thanks for your fast response Lucy. I have done what you said, using the same email as this account to log the bug report. This happens for all videos not just one. Video format mp4.

        For what it's worth, same issue here. High resolution videos are essentially unwatchable on my Quest 3, while the 2 works fine.

          I am also having the same issue, but I also experienced the issue with Playa. Wondering if there is some kind of bug with the Quest 3 in general.

            Thank you for your valuable feedback.

            Maybe there are some universal problems about SMB streaming on Quest 3. We're contacting Meta to work on the problems.

            You can temporarily stream videos from computer to Quest 3 over AirScreen or DLNA. If you'd like to use AirScreen, please go to our website and click SKYBOX Windows/Mac Client to download AirScreen.

            If you'd like to stream videos over DLNA, please add videos to some DLNA servers and go to SKYBOX's Network channel to access the DLNA servers.

              Can confirm 7k and 8k stream perfectly over AirScreen in Quest3 but not even close to watchable with SMB.

                Hey friends, sorry to keep you waiting. We noticed that router frequency bands may affect the playback. Could you please tell us your router information? Are you using 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi?

                  Thank you for your reply. We'll do more tests to further look into the issue.

                    I have also noticed that if I add too many files to Airscreen at once it develops choppy playback. Anything under 20 or so files works but if the library is larger then that it has problems, even after waiting for thumbnails to load.

                      Lucy 5G. I even disabled 2.4G and forced Quest 3 to connect via 5G.

                        Lucy Hi Lucy, I would like to provide an update.

                        I recently tried HereSphere and no issue playing back video. Super smooth. Unfortuntately Skybox still lagging every 2 seconds. Everytime it lags it shows a speed of only 1.5mb/s - 2mb/s. It seems like a Skybox issue now rather than a Quest 3 universal issue.

                        My situation is the same as yours, but when switching to 2.4G on the same LAN, I unexpectedly managed to play smoothly.

                        In 5G WIFI6, during playback, there will be a BUFFERING 0.0X in the middle of the screen M/s.

                        But in a 5G environment, using the built-in VD player and 4XVR, the same video can be played smoothly, and SKYBOX has been running at a low speed BUFFER.

                        At the same time, I have also been using QUEST2, with the same version number and settings as QUEST3, and there are no issues with playback.

                                I am using Quest 3 and have the same issue. To Solve this laggy buffering, as zealmonk said that switch to 2.4G wifi then it solved and play 4K/8k video very smooth (2.4 wifi network at least >7MB/s, if use 5G wifi less < 2MB/s).
                                And I did test my 5G wifi network connection speed at least 800 mb/s.

                                SKYBOX support team should fixed this issue.

                                  Thought to give another update:

                                  I forced Quest 3 to 2.4G WIFI as other folks suggested. Problem solved. No lagging any more.

                                  And this only happens in Skybox on Quest 3. I used 5G on other apps - no speed issue. I used 5G on the old Quest 2 in Skybox - no speed issue. Only 5G on Quest 3 in Skybox having issue.

                                  Hope this info helps Skybox team to triage the bug.

                                    Hello, just wondering any update to this issue? I have to move away from Skybox due to this issue, but do miss the nice UI Skybox has.
