Well, since my last post I've used Virtual Desktop to watch the 3D versions of Thor, Avengers, Iron-Man 3, Thor the Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
I've gotten to watch all these movies in 3D which I never have before and also got to see them 'On the Big Screen' in a 'Virtual' Cinema. 3D failed in the home because on the average sized TV with the couch the average 10+ feet away its just not very impressive. Much better on a Home Theater Projector (I have a 130" screen with a 1080p Projector). 3D is fantastic in a Virtual Cinema on a huge screen though. Point is, IMHO, as more people get exposed to Quality Standalone VR HMD's and Virtual Cinemas like SkyboxVR, its going to become one of the killer apps. To think I get what I get from a $160 device is amazing. While 6 DOF HMD with 6 DOF controller Gaming focused Quest makes many people wonder if GO has any future, I think a 3DOF GO 2 with even higher res panel/s has a future even as a pure Virtual Cinema device. Who wouldn't want their own private 200 seater Cinema for $200 !!!
However, I haven't touched SkyboxVR for over a week and I've actually gotten used to Virtual Desktops 'Dark Theater'. Its grown on me. I now think of it like I'm watching the movie in Universals 50 seater private screening theater for execs rather than a large commercial Theater.
Have to say though, that when I booted up SkyboxVR to refresh my memory about the size and decor of its Virtual Theater after watching a Guardians of the Galaxy Double Bill in Virtual Desktops 'Dark Theater', well it reminded me how perfect the SkyboxVR Virtual Theater is. Screen size was perfect, Photoreal Aesthetic and decor is stunning. The sense of scale of the screen and cinema interior is wonderful even sitting at the back. Seeing all those rows of seats in front of you really sells it. The only reason not to use it is that VR this generation is too low resolution so at the moment its better to sit in the middle or front row so that the Virtual Screen fills ones FOV and much more of the GO/Quests pixels are used for the actual movie and not 'wasted' on the environment around the screen.
So what am I saying here?
Well, just wanted to give SkyboxVR props for being the perfect/best Standalone/Mobile Virtual Cinema app by far. Its only my specific requirements of wanting to use KODI as my Media Library UI for accessing and playing my media content in Virtual Cinemas and my desire to use my real 5.1 Audio setup for the audio instead of the VR HMD's in built audio solutions, that makes Virtual Desktop the better app for my particular requirements.
Best of luck in the future guys and I'll keep myself updated on SkyboxVR developments in case you guys ever integrate Remote Desktop Streaming of the quality of Virtual Desktops. Till then, its back to Virtual Desktop for me.
