  • Carmack's vr5kplayer .stripes format support?

Thank you for adding support for the cube-mapped panorama videos from YouTube! That is my most frequently used format, as my favorite videos with the highest replay value are the music videos from Youtube.

Unfortunately, the highest supported quality right now (4K) still has too few pixels for a 360 degree VR panorama, so they are a bit blurry. And I know Oculus Go would not be able to handle more, even if the player tried to support it.

So what do you think of adding support for the .stripes format, used for the well-known Henry demo video on Oculus Go? I think that is the best 3D video quality possible on that device. And I wouldn't mind converting my favorite videos into it, but building and running the player via ADB every time would be inconvenient. Do you think Skybox could use the sources from Oculus to support that format?

It should also work for GearVR, which currently has a larger install base.

Our engineers is working on a new feature that will significantly improve the current video quality. Even with the current 4K resolution you will notice the difference in quality.
We have completed the prototype of this technology and currently plan to add this feature to 0.1.9.0. ETA 30 days.

Regarding the new format that you said, we haven't seen too many videos based on this format yet. We will definitely support it when it is popular. In addition, we are also making our own private HD format specifically for VR video, and will test this format this year.

Thank you for the update! Looking forward to the enhanced quality!

Fair point about the new format popularity.
